How do braces work

Orthodontic treatment works by applying gentle pressure over time to straighten teeth that are growing, or have already grown, out of place. At Wahroonga Family Dental Centre, we offer a comprehensive range of orthodontic treatments that utilise the very latest technologies. Our range of orthodontic treatments includes non-extraction orthodontics, growth guidance, transparent aligners, ceramic and lingual braces.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces utilise clear or tooth coloured brackets, and on some occasions, tooth coloured wires, that blend in with teeth. Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, with the only difference being their virtually transparent appearance.

When considering the benefits of using ceramic braces, it is clear that they are much less noticeable than metal braces, whilst also moving teeth at a faster rate than that of transparent or clear aligners.

When it comes to the cons of ceramic braces, they are generally more expensive than regular metal braces, whilst also posing the ability to stain easily when not cleaned properly.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are the same as traditional braces, except the brackets and wires are placed on the interior of the teeth. These braces are for those who are interested in braces treatment, yet don’t want them to be seen.

The benefits of lingual braces are visible from the outset; well they are visible to the one undergoing treatment at least (which is the main idea). Although those with lingual braces appear to not have braces at all, there are some negative aspects associated with lingual braces treatment. Lingual braces are known to be more difficult to clean, more uncomfortable to the patient and more expensive when compared to general braces.

Straighten teeth without braces

Yes, it’s possible, through the likes of Invisible aligners. Invisible aligners consist of a mouthguard like clear plastic aligner that works to slowly adjust teeth to their desired position.  This type of treatment is an aesthetically pleasing alternative to braces that consists of a series of removable aligners that are changed every two weeks for the next set of aligners, ensuring a consistent amount of pressure is placed on the teeth.

The aligners should be worn day and night, or more specifically for around 22 hours per day to ensure maximum efficiency. You will be required to change aligners every two weeks, with a full treatment taking approximately 9-18 months depending on your individual situation.

Transparent aligners possess a number of benefits, as they are not only invisible to the naked eye, but they are removable, allowing you to eat, drink, brush and floss. The negative aspects of transparent aligners also must be considered. Firstly, transparent aligners are not a viable option for those with serious dental problems, whilst not being available to children. Additionally, transparent aligners are a more expensive option when compared to other treatments, whilst treatment is known to generally take longer.
